We’ve mapped this 18 km grand tour of Reykjavik for those who’d like a long run and also as a resource to choose a section. The route is nearly exclusively on off-road paths, with 60% of it along the water. There are numerous options to shorten & lengthen the route, or to choose a section — some of this route overlaps with our other Reykjavik routes.
Start at the pier near the Maritime Museum. The first 1.5 km is along the Suðurgata, crossing to the southern waterfront. Then, run along the south side waterfront for 5 km, passing just south of the airport, and the Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach. Great water views! Cross Highway 40, continuing on a pedestrian path, through the Fossvogur area, for 2.8 km to Highway 41 and the outskirts of the Elliðaárdalur park. Bear left, crossing the highway, then along the Suðurlandsbraut for 1 km, to the Zoo, where there’s also a sports center and running track. Continue north, crossing the highway again to the northside waterfront and run the final 3 km along the Sculpture & Shore Walk.
