Upper Don Trail & City Center Parks

This is a pleasant run along a section of the River Ron and on trails through several adjacent parks near the city centre. There are numerous opportunities to add on.

Start on the south bank of the river near the Kelham Island Museum. Head south along the Upper Don Trail, with nice views of the river. After 0.5 miles, use Bridge St. to the Castlegate Trail to connect to Park Square, and then South Street Park & the Cholera Monument Grounds. Cross the A6135 into Norfolk Heritage Park, a lovely park with some tree-lined avenues and woodland trails. The route ends at 2.5 miles. OPTION: on the return, take a detour just east into the scenic, hilly Skye Edge Fields.

Add-Ons: Near the Upper Don trail, join Five Weirs Wall, which heads northeast along the River Don, or the paths at Victoria Quays, which run along the Sheffield Basin and the canal to Rotherham.

Essentials
  • 5 miles (8 km) out and back, with add-on options
  • 357 feet (108m) -- gradual rise north to south
  • Upper Don Trail near the Kelham Island Museum, or other spot along the route
