In the southern park of Turku, Hirvensalo Island is a community of 9,000 that’s also the site of numerous recreation areas: parks, a golf course, and a small ski resort/sledding hill. It’s a nice spot to create your own route on the network of mainly quiet roads. The terrain is a combination of fields, farms, and a few wooded sections. Note: many of the main roads have a cycle path alongside. The smaller roads lack a sidewalk/shoulder, but are lightly trafficked.
We suggest creating your own route here, trying to stick to the smaller roads or the cycle paths of the main roads. A good place to start is from the parking lot of the ski area, just south of the Hirvensalobron Bridge (Hirvensalonsilta) that accesses the island. If you’d like to do a loop of the island on the main road, it’s 14.5 km (9 miles). There’s a cycle path on about half of the route, and most of the remainder is safe for running.
- Perimeter loop on the main road is 14.5 km (9 miles); Or create your own route on the smaller roads
- Small, rolling hills with one 100 foot climb at the 7.2 mile mark of the perimeter loop
- Ski area is a good place to park and start a run
- Parking at the ski area, just south of the Hirvensalobron Bridge
