In the Barmen section of Wuppertal, Barmer Anlagen is a nice spot for gentle, hilly trail running on mainly forested trails. The 100-hectare green space is the largest privately owned park in Germany. There are many km of interlocking paths, passing many species of trees, meadows, ponds, and numerous sculptures and monuments. Among the highlights is the Tölleturm (Tolle Tower), a stone observation tower from which there are great views into the Wuppertal valley. The trails are wide, and a mix of paved and gravel. It’s ~1.6 km east-west, and a perimeter loop is ~4 km. NOTE: Hilly!!

Add-Ons: There are many options for a longer run in this area, in adjoining green spaces.

  • At the southern end of Barmer Anlagen, you can use Vorwerk Park to connect to Scharpenacken (Naherholungsgebiet Scharpenacken). This large park in the Heckinghausen district, built on a former military training ground is an elevated plateau characterized by rolling hills and vast, open meadows. It’s very scenic, hilly running on a grid-like system of paths. The trails/path are wide and a mix of paved and gravel. A ‘loop’ would be ~5 km, though you could easily put together 7-8 km in the Scharpenacken.
  • Barmer Wald is more of a dense forest, with more rugged trails
  • There are additional running options in the Murmelbach Valley
