The Sambatrasse multi-use trail is the other good spot for a longer off-road run in Wuppertal. This paved rail-trail is located more in the southern part of the city, and runs for 8.5 km from the Wuppertal Zoo south to Cronenberg. Compared to Nortbahnstrasse, it is greener and more pastoral with a linear park feel, but also hillier (though the grades are gentle). NOTE: Hilly, with a steady climb of 200m over the first 5 km.
The north end is near the Wuppertal Zoo. The first section is the Tiger & Turtle bridge (the “Zoobrücke”), which crosses over the Wuppertal Zoo, giving you a unique view of the tiger and lion enclosures from above! At KM 4, the trail passes through the Arboretum Burgholz, where you can add with its many km of forested trails featuring 100+ tree species. The southern section is a mix of open and forested landscape. The south end is near the center of Cronenberg.
