For some hills, views, and green, one can put together a quite nice run in the Binhu District combining Xihui Park and Huishan Ancient Town. And just west of there is challenging, hilly running in Huishan Forest Park.
Start in Xihui Park, which is a scenic park with hillside gardens. Run the paths to the hilltop to enjoy the great views (there’s also a funicular that leads to the top). A loop around the park on its paths is ~1.5 km, with a ~100m gain.
Then, run gently around the streets of Huishan Ancient Town, which lies just north of Xihui Park. Xiuzhang St. is the main, straight street, and it leads to the Huishan Temple. It can get crowded, so go early!
Just west of Huishan Ancient Town, it is also possible to run in Huishan Forest Park. It is a hilly, mainly forested park, with several peaks rising to 300m+. The go-to here is the Panshan (Spiral Mountain) Trail, a paved, tree-lined trail with a separate lane for walkers & joggers that features animal graffiti and some cultural relics (note: can get crowded!). It’s 6 km and climbs some 300m. There’s also a 5 km Loop Trail, a large network of steps, and several more rugged hiking trails. NOTE: All the running in Huishan Forest Park is hilly!
