El Malecón (waterfront) is the signature spot for running in Puerto Plata and one of the better off-road options in the DR. Puerto Plata, on the island’s north coast, comprises one of the largest clusters of hotels, resorts, and commercial areas on the island. Runners who stay at or visit this area will be delighted to know there is a wide, palm tree-shaded sidewalk along the coast that offers 2 miles (3.2 km) of running from Long Beach to City Center. Near Desvio a la Puntilla, runners can continue northwest up past the San Felipe fort to an awesome vista from Park La Puntilla. This tacks on about another half mile. This 5 mile (8 km) out and back passes several beaches and lots of fun waterfront bars and restaurants, so there are lots of opportunities to finish off your workout with a little refreshment.
