River Avon: Bristol

ROGER ROBERTS / River Avon Trail / CC BY-SA 2.0

For a longer, easy to follow off-road run in Bristol, we recommend the path along the River Avon. In the center of Bristol, there are marina paths along both sides of the river. We start our route at M Shed at the Prince Street Bridge. Follow Museum Way to the Chocolate Path, along the north side of the river. After ~1 mile, cross the Ashton Ave. Bridge. From there, the path along becomes a dirt surface and heads north along the west side of the Avon for 4 miles to Ham Green Lake. It’s a mainly wooded path, with intermittent river views (more so in winter). There are rolling hills.   Note: can get muddy.

At Brunel Way, a good add-on is Greville Smyth Park. Some of our other favorite running routes in Bristol can be accessed from the River Avon path: Ashton Court, Clifton Downs, and Leigh Woods.
