A great way to see some of Dover’s historic highlights and also get in a nice off-road run is to put together a route combining the Capital City Trail & St. Jones Greenway. We’ve mapped a one-way route of 4.7 miles, plus the option to add Silver Lake Park.
The heart of the route is the Capital City Trail, which runs between Division St. and Capitol Park. Starting at Division St., run along Park Dr./Memorial Park, then do a loop around Dover’s Capitol area, anchored by First State Heritage Park and the Old Capitol building. It’s a lovely square with historic homes. The next 0.7 miles is less pleasant, on a trail paralleling MLK Blvd. and then Highway 13, connecting to the St. Jones Greenway/Isaacs Branch Trail. This multi-use path runs for 2.7 miles to Lebanon Rd., through a park (but also paralleling Highway 1).
Silver Lake Park. CC: Famartin
Add-On/Variation: Just north of the Division St. start of the Capital City Trail is Silver Lake Park — a lovely, wooded park with a trail that’s nice for running. It’s a ~1 mile out and back route.
