Mark Lowenstein

Harlingen is a small port city on the Wadden Sea. It’s one of the more popular visitor destinations in Friesland, for its large fleet of historical shallow draught sailing vessels and important historical buildings in the center. The best places to run in Harlingen are its several km of canal paths, long pier, and the Strand path heading south.

Start near the center and see our mapped route of some of the canal-side paths, which are lined with pretty homes and boats. The first ~2 km is out & back on the Kanalweg. Then head south on  Zhuidoostersingel, then west on Zuiderhaven. Make your way over to the pier, to run on the paved, straight shot path, enjoying the splendid water views and the 11Fountains sculpture, a testament to Harlingen’s whaling history.

Add-On/Variation: Our main canal & pier route is 8 km. For more, or to vary it, add the Strand path, a gravel trail that runs south along the sea for many km.
