A nice waterfront run in the ‘Salmon Capital of the World’! The Campbell River Seawalk is one of the better opportunities for an off-road waterfront run on Vancouver Island. A paved waterfront path — the Campbell River Seawalk — runs along Discovery Passage, a strait that separates Vancouver Island from Quadra Island. It’s possible to run for up to 7.2 km. PRO TIP: Have a post-run drink at the 50th Parallel Grill & Tap!
The path (also called the Rotary Seawalk) runs alongside Island Highway (19A) for much of its length. This road is quieter, as Highway 19, the ‘Inland Highway’, carries most of the traffic. The south end of the Seawalk is at Maryland Ave. in the Ocean Grove area, and runs north to Robert V. Ostler Park. There are some wonderful water views. Some sections of the path are more scenic, along the water and away from the road, while other sections are a bit less scenic. Fun fact: you’ll see a sign for the 50th Parallel at km 3.4 (Merecroft Rd.).
At the 4.2 km mark, the path is a sidewalk along Island Highway for 1.7 km, then there’s a dedicated path for the final 1 km to Robert V. Ostler Park. There are great views and some additional paths around the Coast Marina.
Add-Ons: Numerous additional parks and trails in Campbell River. There are easy, wide forest trails in the Beaver Lodge Lands. See this TRAIL MAP
PRO TIP: There are several spots in the area to see the salmon. Peak season is August to November. For a unique experience, go salmon snorkeling at local dive shop Oceanfix. And visit the Quinsam River Hatchery.
