São Miguel: Vigia de São Pedro

Mark Lowenstein

The Vigia de São Pedro is among the easiest of the waterfront walking trails on São Miguel. It’s great for running. Located on the northern coast between Calhetas and São Vicente Ferreira, the path is in most places a wide dirt road, running on a bluff above the water. There are fantastic views of the water, and several marked viewpoints (miradouro).

Start in Calhetas on a brief road section. Then follow the well-marked SM1 path (red and yellow dashes) west. There’s a parking lot at the western end in São Vicente Ferreira near the Miradouro do Navio.

Pro Tip: There are several ‘natural swimming holes’, toward the eastern end of the trail.

Essentials
  • Up to 6.5 km (4 miles) one-way
  • Rolling hills
  • East end: Calhetas. West end: São Vicente Ferreira
