Brattleboro: Retreat Farm Trails, Wantastiquet Mountain Trails

Just outside Brattleboro are two terrific options for trail running: Retreat Farm and Wantastiquet Mountain Trails. Retreat Farm is more scenic and has something for all abilities, while Wantastiquet Mountain is more challenging.

Retreat Farm. There are 10 miles of trails in this 500 acres of conserved forests, farmlands, trails, and waterways. There’s a nice variety in terms of terrain and ability. There are trails around open farm fields and meadows, as well as some more wooded sections. To get the heart rate up, run the stairs to the ski jump! This trail map has excellent information and also some suggested loops. There are five different trailheads. Free and open dawn to dusk.

Wantastiquet Mountain Natural Area. This is more challenging trail running. From the access point off Mountain Road, it’s 1.7 miles to the Summit, on a combination old quarry road and more rugged trail. It’s a 1,190 foot gain, with some steep grades. One can also continue on the 513-acre Madame Sherri Forest trails. It’s 3.2 miles from Mountain Rd. to Gulf Rd. Additional, fairly rugged trails head south to Daniels Mountain.
