Bocagrande Waterfront

Reg Natarajan

A long run along the open seaboard facing west on the Caribbean, this sidewalk begins in the south by Playa Bocagrande and reaches north past the walls of Old Town, San Diego, and El Cabrero almost to the airport. The sidewalk borders a fairly busy street and can be narrow at times, but the nicest section is the southernmost 2.6 km along Carrera 1. Near Old Town/Parque Marina, the street becomes Avenida Santander (mostly brick pavers) and continues for 3 km on the seawall to Playa Marbella. The sidewalk ends after about 6 km as 90A becomes a wider, more heavily trafficked highway, but it is possible to continue along the beach. Likewise, in the south end, runners can drop down to the sand of Playa Bocagrande for some variety.

Add-On: At Parque Marina, use our Getsemani/Manga Waterfront run (Calle 24), which can add 5 km out and back.

Essentials
  • Up to 12 km out and back
  • 50 feet
  • Playa Bocagrande
  • Carrera 1

As of October 2022, this route is largely under construction with big tarps blocking access to and views of the ocean and restricting sidewalk access in some places. I would recommend waiting until the construction is done and doing the wall route or another route until then.
