Crystal River/Citrus County, FL

Withlacoochee State Trail

Creative Commons: DanTD

For a long off-road run, you can’t beat the Withlacoochee State Trail. At 46 miles, it’s one the longest rail trails in Florida. About 25 miles of the paved trail runs through Citrus County, between Floral City and Citrus Springs. The trail passes through ranches, woods, small towns, and several parks and preserves. In some sections there’s a side equestrian trail, which provides a nice relief for runners’ knees. There are numerous trailheads and landmarks, as seen on the trail map, and mile markers along the way. A few spots and add-on opportunities (miles from south to north, our route not mile marker):

Withlacoochee State Forest (15m): Additional trails for running & mountain biking
Floral City (23m). Avenue of the Oaks
Fort Cooper State Park (27m). Additional trails
Inverness/Cooter Lake (29.7). Cooter Pond Park and some nice lakeside roads
Lake Hernando (35.5)
Essentials
  • Up to 46 miles one-way
  • 1000 feet from south to north, one-way
