Westfalenpark is one of those iconic European parks, and is one of the best places to run in Europe. The 70-hectare car-free park, located 3 km south of the city centre, features a large network of gravel-surfaced paths passing extensive themed garden sections, including the Rosarium — one of the largest rose gardens in the world, with 3,000 species! There are several other parks & green spaces near Wesfalenpark, providing an opportunity for longer runs. Notes: Entrance fee required. Lit at night!

For running, it’s best to create your own route among the many km of interlocking paths. A loop of the perimeter is 3.5-4.0 km. Do that, and then add with some of the interior paths. Among the highlights to hit:
Florianturm. 720-foot telecom tower with two viewing decks. Northern part of the park
Sonnensegel. An impressive large-scale tent construction that serves as a landmark and provides a covered space for various outdoor events. Central part of the park
Rosarium. West end of the park
Flamingoteich. Flamingo pond, near the Rosarium.
Longer Run Options: From the Buschmühle gate at the southeastern end of the park, take the 1.4 km Emscherpromenade (path) through Halde Schallacker & Hoetger Park to Phoenix See (lake), where there’s a ~3.7 km loop path (see route map below). Directly south, there are more paths in Grünkeil park.

Man-made lake built on the site of a former steel mill in southeastern Dortmund is a popular running spot. A loop around the lake on paved paths is ~4 km. There are nice lake views, two observation decks, and lakeside cafés and restaurants. Good add-on options.
A 'runseeing' tour of Dortmund's largely pedestrianized commercial centre, inside the Wallring. Pleasant streets for running and lots to look at. Includes the Stadtgarten park. Can extend from there on linear path to Westfalenpark.
Expansive green space in the northern part of Dortmund. Pleasant paths around a mainly forested park, a couple of lakes, a running track and the Big Tipi -- the world's largest Tipi! Add w/paths around the Naturmuseum and the Ems-Kanal.
In the Huckarde district in western Dortmund, we love running the hilly, gravel paths of Revierpark Wischlingenn and some of the cycle paths along the Roßbach canal.
