Dortmund is a city of 600,000 in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The ninth-largest city in the country, Dortmund lies on the Emscher and Ruhr rivers. The historic part of the city, which was heavily damaged in WWII, is inside the ring road that follows the old city walls.
There’s terrific running in Dortmund, in its numerous parks, and paths along waterways. One of the best places to run in Dortmund is Westfalenpark — a classic European Park. Nearby is Phoenix See (lake), with a popular 4 km loop. Our ‘runseeing’ tour of Dortmund hits the highlights of the largely pedestrianized commercial centre, including Stadtgarten. In the northern part of Dortmund, we love running in Fredenbaumpark & adjacent Ems-Kanal Path. In the Huckarde district in western Dortmund, there’s nice running in Revierpark Wischlingenn & adjacent Roßbach Canal Paths.
