Hamptons, NY (The Hamptons)

Highlights of Montauk

Montauk is at the tip of Long Island, 118 miles from Manhattan. It’s a major tourist destination, featuring six state parks, many trails, the first lighthouse in New York state, and a major center for commercial and recreational fishing. There are many great options for running in Montauk. We’ve put together several options.

State Park and Lighthouse Route. This is the best spot for a run in Montauk. The 4 mile loop incorporates the Bluff Lookout, the Lighthouse, and part of Camp Hero. The section around the lighthouse is especially lovely. For an added 1.5 miles, to the Camp Hero Rd. loop.

Montauk Village to Lighthouse. It’s a 5.5 mile straight shot from the center of Montauk to the lighthouse, and one of the best opportunities to get in some hills. The first 3 miles is along Rt. 27, the main road, which can be busy but has a good shoulder. Then you’re on Old Montauk Hwy, to the Bluff Lookout, with great water views as you rejoin Rt. 27 to the Lighthouse.

Montauk Point State Park. An 862 acre park with great views of the Atlantic and miles of trails that can be used for running. Some are more open, others wooded. This Park Trail Map has good info on trails and distances. The Paumanok Path, along the bluff, is a real treat.
