Central Business District Run

Creative Commons

Another decent place to run in Kigali is in the Central Business District. While it won’t win ‘scenic run of the year’ awards, there are wide streets with sidewalks that are suitable and safe for running. The area consists of office buildings, hotels & restaurants, and several Kigali sites such as the Norrsken House, Norrskenl, & Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village.

Create Your Own Route: Rather than map a specific route, we recommend designing your own. The best roads for running are in the area between the KN 1 Road to the north, the KN 20 to the west, and the KN 7 to the east. Most of the main roads here have decent sidewalks, especially along the main hotel strip inside KN 2 Ave. and west of KN 3 Rd.

For a longer run (and some hills), take the KN 8 to the north of the CBD to Green Park, to the KN 14, passing the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Continue north on the KN  14 to Gigi’s Garden and and then to Kigali Independent University (or other smaller roads in the area). Note: Any roads heading north of the KN 1 are going to be uphill!

Mapped Routes: This 11 km mapped route is primarily in the CBD, using some of the main streets. Starting at the Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial, take the KN 3 north, then the east side, a straight shot using KN6/KN41, and then mainly on the KK 2. We’ve also provided a link to an 18.5 km route in the CBD done by friend of Great Runs Joylin Nodell. Note: hilly!

Longer Run: Head east of the CBD toward Kimihurura Park and see our route there.

Essentials
  • Create your own route between the KN 1 Road to the north, the KN 20 to the west, and the KN 7 to the east
  • Some hills, especially if you head north
  • Norrsken House is a good start point
