Nanjing, China

CC: Xiquinho Silva

Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu, a province in East China. The city has 11 districts an a population of nearly 10 million. Situated in the Yangtze River Delta, and one of the world’s largest inland ports Nanjing served as the capital of various Chinese dynasties and governments dating to the 3rd century. There’s some nice running in Nanhing, centered on historic parks, many km of paths along the Yangtze River, and the ancient city wall. Pro Tip: Hit plum blossom season, from mid-June to end July.

Most of the best places to run in Nanjing are located on the east side of the river, inside the G42 highway. A favorite among runners is the 9 km lake loop in Xuanwu Park. We’ve also mapped a few different routes along the ~20 km of paths along the Yangtze, which also features several riverside parks and wetlands. Another memorable run is the cobbled path along the Nanjing City Wall — there are two separate sections. Over in the Purple Mountain area, runners love the tree canopy of Lingyuan Road and other area trails.

Runner Notes: June through August are particularly hot and humid, with monsoonal rains.
