Running the City Wall of Nanjing is both permitted and is a memorable experience. It’s the world’s longest brick city wall, built in the Ming dynasty, and stretches for 25 km, with 13 gates. Run on the cobbled surface on the wall, or on the gentler footpath alongside the wall.  Notes: Go early, can get crowded. It’s also possible to run on top of the wall, for a small fee. Also, this is difficult to map but there’s good information at the main gates.

There are two sections of the wall that are best for running;

Northern Section: This 4 km stretches from Shence Gate to Taiping Gate, featuring good views of Xuanwu Lake on one side and Jiming Temple on the other. The section is in the area of Xuanwuhu Park, which can be a good add-on. It runs from Kunlun Lu to Taicheng Lu and Jimingsi Lu on the southern side of Xuanwu Lake .

Southern Section. This part of the wall is anchored by the huge Zhonghua Gate, or “Gate of China“. It runs between Jiqing Gate and Dongshuiguan Gate. The distance is ~6 km.

Western Section. Located in the Shitoucheng area, the running on the wall is not as accessible, but there are rolling hill paths at Stone City Park (Shi Tou Cheng Lu) and a running track (Yueyahu Tianqiao) nearby.
