Newark is the largest city in New Jersey. Located at the mouth of the Passaic River, Newark is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It is a major seaport, and Newark Liberty Airport is one of the busiest in the country. Out guide to running in Newark features a few good runs in the city, as well as some nice spots within a 10-mile radius. Also, see our guide to Jersey City & Hoboken for some fantastic waterfront running.
The best place to run in Newark is the Olmsted-designed Branch Brook Park. Our ‘runseeing’ tour of downtown Newark features historical sites such as the huge huge Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. For those staying near Newark Liberty Airport, nearby Weequahic Park is a decent option. Slightly further afield, we recommend heading to nearby South Orange, which has gorgeous parks and historic residential neighborhoods. The best trail running nearby is the extensive South Mountain Reservation.
