This 2,000 acre park offers the best opportunity for extensive off-road and trail running in the area near Newark. The park borders S. Orange, W. Orange, Maplewood, and Millburn, and is about 1 mile up the hill from the S. Orange train station. There’s a good variety for running here, including fields, bridle paths, and more rugged trails. The gentler bridle paths include the ~1.5 mile Longwood/Crest trail and the River Trail between Northfield Ave. & Glen Ave. The more rugged, yellow-blazed Lenape Trail is a 6-mile trail run, and leads to Maple Falls. The path around the Orange Reservoir is 1.7 miles. See the map below.

Olmsted-designed park that is on the National Register. Beautiful paths line this historic park, which is also home to the largest collection of cherry trees in the United States. A loop of the paved perimeter path is 4.5 miles.
A decent running option just west of Newark Liberty airport and accessible from airport hotels. About 3-4 miles possible, the highlight being the 2-mile loop on a path around Weequahic Lake. There's also an excellent running track.
Worth a quick drive or train ride to enjoy a leafy run in South Orange's parks, the Montrose Historic District, and the campus of Seton Hall University. Cameron Park near S. Orange center and lovely paths in Monte Irvin Orange Park.
The Saddle River County Park Bike Path is a 7.5 mile (one-way) paved path along the Saddle River and the former railroad.
