See historic bridges, waterfront paths, the old city walls, parks, two rivers, and the Maastricht University campus — all in one 8 km tour!
Start at the Maastricht Visitor Center, and run west along Grote Staat, one of Maastricht’s main shopping streets in the Binnenstad area, to the Vrijthof, one of Maastricht’s main squares, with the churches St Servaskerk/ St Janskerk and the 16th- century Spanish Government House. Then, head south along Papenstraat, through the main part of the Maastricht University campus. Just past the Natural History Museum, do a quick loop around the Waldeckpark (site of underground caves), then back east on paths along the Jeker River to Stadtpark, one of the city’s signature green spaces with fountains and nice water views. Head north through the park along the park along the Meuse River for just short of 1 km, to the historic Sint Servaasbrug, a 13th century footbridge. In the middle of the bridge, a pier forms a walkway to the Wilhelmina Bridge. LEFT on Wilhelmina Bridge back toward the city, and run through the Markt, which is the other primary square in Maastricht. The next section is an exploration of the Hoge Fronten, the old city fort(use Capucijnenstraat to get there). Paths around the perimeter form a ~2 km loop. Complete the run by heading back east through the northern side of the University campus.
Add-Ons: Paths along the Meuse River, on both sides. Also, explore the historic area of Wyck, on the eastern side of the river, across the Brug or Servaasbrug bridge.
