Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park, located just north of Mendocino, features ~4 miles of scenic trails for running. The centerpiece of the 300-acre park is a protected 1909 lighthouse, sitting on a rugged headland overlooking the dramatic sea, with crashing waves below.
We’ve put together a ~3 mile route featuring the main trails. From the parking area off Point Cabrillo Dr., run on the paved Lighhouse Rd. Trail downhill for 0.6 miles toward the water to reach the Lighthouse, where there’s a museum and tours. Then, join the ~1.5 mile coastal trail. It’s a fairly narrow dirt path on the coastal bluff, with generally good footing. The views down to the water are spectacular. From the lighthouse, head south on the South Trail which we do by heading south on the South Trail for 0.5 miles. Retrace your steps, and then head north of the lighthouse on the North Trail for ~0.8 miles, then turning inland and using the North Trail to return to the parking lot.
Add-Ons: You can also run along Point Cabrillo Dr., a fairly quiet road that comes off Highway 1. Note: No shoulder.
