For a fantastic, scenic run without having to worry about cars, take the 10-minute ferry to Governors Island. The 172-acre island is car-free and features several miles of roads and paths. There are fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty from the perimeter road, and some rolling hill roads and paths in the interior. The landscape is fairly open and exposed. The National Park Service manages Fort Jay, Castle Williams, and Dock 102 at the eastern end of the island.
For running, a great start is the 2.1 mile loop around the outer edge of the island. Then, explore some of the interior paths. The island is ~1 mile long and ~0.5 miles wide. At the western end of the island are ‘The Hills’, which are four hills rising to 80 feet above the harbor. Most of the paths are paved, though there are some gravel trails in the interior.
Ferries run frequently from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. The cost is $5. There are restroom and food options on the island. Island Information
