Peniche Waterfront Loop

Peniche is an attractive seaside community located 100 km north of Lisbon, known for its fishing and surfing on Atlantic-facing beaches. Peniche is also a lovely spot for running: there’s a an 11 km seaside route with great water views, running on bluff trails above the water, and runnable long beaches.

Google Street View

For the seaside route, you’ll mainly follow the N114 Estr. Marginal around the peninsula. Most of the time, the road is above the water, and there are ocean views the entire way. Some sections of the road itself have a path/soft shoulder, while others don’t. But there aren’t too many cars.  Along some of the route, there are also bluff-side trails adjacent to the road.

Start anywhere along the loop, or conveniently at the Peniche Tourism office. Head counterclockwise, running through the small Parque do Baluarte, and then do the 1.2 km loop of the Papôa — great views!. Continue along, passing several viewpoints and observation decks. The Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse is near km 6, Cave Furninha near km 7, and and the road runs alongside the Praia do Portinho da Areia Sul (beach) at km 8. At km 9.5 is the Fort of Peniche, and just past there take a jaunt out to the Marina.
