St. Augustine, FL

Waterfront and Fort

publicdomainpictures.net

This 4-mile out and back is the most scenic run in St. Augustine. Most of it is along the water, which features great views of the Matanzas River and the Atlantic Ocean. We start at Water St., just north of the historic Castillo Fort. Run south along Water St., and then along the waterside paths at the eastern end of the Fort. At the southern end of the Fort is the beginning of the bayfront path. Run for 1 mile along the water, passing under the Bridge of Lions, and continuing on Avenida Menendez. At the end of Avenida Menendez, the road turns inland and continues for 0.7 miles along Marine St. This section doesn’t have water views, but there are some lovely historic homes along the pleasant street.

For the return, retrace your steps along Marine St., but to vary it a bit, run for 0.5 miles along Marina Sanchez Lake (Cordova St.), then back along the waterfront, and along the A1A side of the Fort.

Longer Run: Mission and Magnolia Ave. From Water St., use Pine St. to get back to San Marcos Ave. briefly, and then enjoy the paths of The Mission, down to the The Great Cross, and the grounds around Our Lady de la Leche Shrine. Then, enjoy 0.5 miles along the gorgeous, canopied Magnolia Ave. This circuit is a 3.5 mile standalone, or can be combined w/waterfront.
