East Coast Trail to Cape Spear Lighthouse

Kenny Louis

Run to the easternmost point in North America along a spectacular coastal trail. This 9 km out and back section of the East Coast Trail footpath runs from the village of Blackhead out to the Cape Spear Lighthouse. Great variety here, from rugged grasslands to woods to jagged points. Starting from Blackhead Bay, the path goes east over the rocky coast, hitting a number of gulches and coves before arriving at the wooden, white paneled Cape Spear Light. Blackhead is 13 km south of downtown, an easy 15 min. drive on Blackhead Rd.

Add-On: Cape Spear Path. At the eastern point, off Blackhead Rd., it is possible to run for many km further south on the Cape Spear Path. This is a more challenging trail run, narrower and with tough footing. Sections are interior/wooded, but south/west of Empty Basket Cove, it is more open with great water views. This trail is fairly remote. Few roads in the area!
