For those wanting a flat, straightforward off-road run, doing laps around Ascarate Lake is a popular option. The lake is located in Ascarate Park, a 400-acre recreation area a few miles east of downtown El Paso that features numerous sports fields, two pools, and a golf course. On a hot day, run around the lake and then go for a dip in one of the pools!
From the parking lot of Thomason Loop, the gravel path around the lake is a flat 1.4 miles. There are water views the whole way. Bonus: lit at night! For a longer run, one could add ~1 mile around the area’s fields and walking paths (or sneak onto the golf course!).
