This is a lovely, flat, nearly all off-road run in Newport, a small Northeast Kingdom city located on the southern shore of beautiful Lake Memphramagog. Among the highlights is the 3.8-mile Beebe Spur Rail Trail, a gravel path that leads right to the Canadian Border, with occasional lake views. Note: the Newport section of the path along Prouty Lake and the farm is NOT shown on maps.
Start on Main St. in the center of Newport and head east, using the pretty wooden boardwalk that runs along the lake. There are gorgeous lake & mountain views. Then, follow the bike path north along Causeway St. for 1/2 mile (this is the least attractive section). Just past Rt. 5, the path heads left, along Landing St,. & Broadview Ave., where a very new section runs right along the lake at Prouty Beach. The path continues along a very scenic Vermont Land Trust protected farm (gravel) for 1/2 mile, to Prouty Dr. Head east along Prouty Dr. for 0.4 miles, then left on the Beebe Spur Rail Trail section of the path. This scenic, wooded gravel path runs right along Lake Memphremagog for 3.8 miles, with occasional water views. It’s especially pretty during foliage season.
Add-Ons: The bike path continues due north for another 16 miles, straight across the Canadian Border, through Quebec’s Eastern Townships to Ayer’s Rock. BUT, you must cross border, which is 1.6 miles east (use N. Derby Rd.).
