Schlossberg (Castle Mountain) is one of the most scenic spots for a run in Freiburg. This mountain spurbetween the Dreisam River and Rhine valley is located just east of Altstadt. There’s a large network of forested trail that wind around the mountain, as well as steep paths to the 450m summit, where you’ll be rewarded with great views of the city, the Rhine valley, and the Black Forest. There’s also funicular — an included elevator — that leads to the summit (3-minute ride).
View from Schlossberg. CC: Zairon
Access this route from the Schwabentor city gate, using the bridge and path that leads to Kanonenplatz observation deck (can also access from Stadtgarten). From there, you can take the steep path that leads to the 35-meter Schlossberg tower, built in 2002, which features 153 steps, and also the remains of a former fortress. For more paths, we’ve mapped a ~3 km loop along Burhaldering path, which skirts the base of the mountain.
Add-On/Alternative: Combine with some of the streets around Altstadt, and the small, attractive Stadtgarten park.
