Mount Mtatsminda Trails

For some scenic, hilly trail running near the center of Tblisi, head to Mount Mtatsminda. Translated as ‘Holy Mountain’, Mount Mtatsminda is one of the major sites of Tblisi, with an old-style amusement park at its summit, a TV Tower, a Pantheon, and great views of the city and the Kura River. One can drive to the summit, or take a funicular off Daniel Chonqadze St. Or, you can run up it!  Note: a steep hill climb.

There are two trails up Mount Mtatsminda. From the Church Of Mikhail of Tver off Polikarpe Kakabadze St., one branch leads to the Memorial fountain of Anzor Chankvetadze (0.8 km, 150m gain), and the other branch leads to the TV Tower/Mtatsminda viewpoint (1.6 km, 235m gain). The lung-busting climb will be rewarded with great views. Footing is challenging.

From the summit, there are additional roads that can be run (note: no sidewalk/shoulder). A great option, and a good challenge, is to run from the parking lot at the summit of Mount Mtatsminda to the Mother of Georgia and the Narikala Fortress. This is a scenic & memorable run, but it’s 7.2 km out and back and 300m of elevation gain. Footing is fairly good. Parts are wooded.
