The extensive series of multi-use paths in the Columbus area continue northeast of Columbus. For an enjoyable destination run, one of our favorites in the area is the Kokusing Gap Trail, whose trailhead is in Mt. Vernon — about an hour’s drive from Columbus. This 13.5 mile mainly asphalt trail, which runs from Mt. Vernon to Danville, is particularly known for its railroad history. You’ll pass old railroad cars, a historic stone arch, public art, and cross two railroad bridges and run through the Howard Tunnel. The first 3.5 miles is more open farmland, while the 3-4 miles east of Howard features more wooded terrain and passes over ravines.

Add-On/Alternative: You can also choose a section of the Heart of Ohio Trail, which is a mainly paved multi-use path that runs between Sunbury (25 miles north of Columbus) and Mt. Vernon. It’s part of the 326-mile Ohio to Erie Trail. The trail mainly parallels Columbus Rd./Highway 36.
