Runners looking to get their heart rate up should try to conquer some of Pittsburgh’s famous street steeps and steps. Pittsburgh features some incredibly steep streets, including Canton Ave. — the steepest street in North America, with a 37% grade. Pittsburgh also has 712 sets of steps, including some ‘stair paths’ topping out at over 300 steps. For fun, we’ve added some of the steepest streets and longest steps to the Running Overview map on the Pittsburgh home page. Below are some of the highlights. We’ve added information on nearby running routes, where appropriate. This site is a more comprehensive listing.

Note none of these streets are longer than 1/4 mile!
Canton Ave. In the Beechview neighborhood. The grandaddy, at 37%, the steepest street in North America. Combine with the adjacent Coast Ave. steps & nearby Boustead St. (29% grade) using Broadway as the connector. Then take Wenzell Ave. west for 1 mile across W. Liberty to the the Ray Avenue Stairs (378 steps!).
Boustead St. 29% grade. Just down Broadway from Canton Ave. in the Beechview neighborhood.
Dornbush St. In East Hills. 32% grade.
East Woodford Avenue. Carrick neighborhood. 27% grade.
Rialto St. Near the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, west bank of the Allegheny, @31st Bridge.
Pittsburgh Stair Paths With 300+ Steps
Ray Avenue Stairs. In Beechview. 378 steps. Can be part of run in Beechview incorporating super-steep Canton Ave. & Boustead St.
Rising Main Stairs. 331 steps. Fineview neighborhood, ~1 mile north of Allegheny Commons Park.
Yard Way Stairs. In the South Side Slopes neighborhood. 317 steps. This is a hilly area, and Yard Way is near South Side Park, which offers several hilly trails and great city views!
57th St. Stairs. 345 Stairs, off Butler Ave. in the Lawrenceville neighborhood. Comes at the 2-mile mark of our Lawrenceville route that includes Highland Park and the Allegheny Arsenal.
