Dortmund has a fairly compact city center, referred to as ‘City’ or Innenstadt, inside the Wallring belt road following the city’s historic medieval walls. Much of the City is pedestrianized. Our ‘runseeing’ tour is a guideline for exploring the centre on foot, and connecting to Westfalenpark for a longer run.
Westenhellweg. Lucas Kaufmann
Hellweg is the main east-west commercial street of the Innenstadt, and it is pedestrian-only. There are many shops & other attractions, with the impressive 13th-century St. Reinold’s Church at the east end. Other streets worth exploring are Kleppingstraße (north-south), Brückstraße & the Museum of Art and Cultural History, and the wide Kampstraße. At the south end is Stadtgarten, a small but pleasant city park with a central fountain and ~1 km of paths.
You could do 3-4 km in the Centre. For a longer run, cross the main Südwall road at the southern end of Stadtgarten, and continue south on a linear park path starting at the Stadthaus transit station. It extends for 1 km south to Westfalenpark.
Longer Run Options: Westfalenpark is ~1 km south of the City Centre. Use the linear park path from the Stadthaus transit station.

Iconic European park with extensive network of gravel paths through several themed garden areas. Includes the Rosarium -- one of the largest rose gardens in the world! A perimeter loop is ~4 km. Good add-on options.
Man-made lake built on the site of a former steel mill in southeastern Dortmund is a popular running spot. A loop around the lake on paved paths is ~4 km. There are nice lake views, two observation decks, and lakeside cafés and restaurants. Good add-on options.
Expansive green space in the northern part of Dortmund. Pleasant paths around a mainly forested park, a couple of lakes, a running track and the Big Tipi -- the world's largest Tipi! Add w/paths around the Naturmuseum and the Ems-Kanal.
In the Huckarde district in western Dortmund, we love running the hilly, gravel paths of Revierpark Wischlingenn and some of the cycle paths along the Roßbach canal.
