Amherst & Northampton, MA

Amherst College Wildlife Sanctuary

The Amherst College Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best kept secrets in town. These flat, wooded paths to the south and east of campus offer great cross-country running just off the Norwottuck Rail Trail. They are a great run on their own or as an addition to a downtown Amherst or Rail Trail run. Notable sections include the Emily Dickinson Trail along the Mill River, the pond path between the tennis courts and College Street, and the Cross Country loop around the Main Fields. All in all, there is over 5 miles of running here and you’re likely to have the place to yourself. A map at the Sanctuary’s entrance provides helpful information on trail options.
