Appleton is a pleasant city just north of Lake Winnebago, overlooking the Fox River. One can put together a nice run in central Appleton, incorporating the historic district, a couple of small parks, and some sections along the river.
Our route starts in the City Park Historic District. Head south through City Park and on paths through Lawrence University. Turn RIGHT on Water St., and then take the S Olde Oneida St. Bridge over the Fox River, passing the Historic Fox River Mills. Then follow the North Island Trail briefly along the river, turning RIGHT on S Lawe St., then LEFT on the Newberry Trail, headed east for 1.5 miles to the end at Telulah Park. Retrace your steps, then crossing the E College Ave. Bridge, then RIGHT on N Green Bay Rd. for 0.5 miles, turning LEFT on E North St. through downtown to the start.
Add-Ons:Â At the N Green Bay St./North St. intersection (5-mile mark), you can continue east on the Fox River Trail for 0.5 miles, or north on a trail for 0.5 miles through Peabody Park. Doing both of these would add a total of ~2 miles. There are also pleasant streets for running in the historic district downtown around City Park.
