In central Bentonville, it’s possible to put together a quite nice run exploring some of the historic downtown streets, then combining with area parks and greenways for a longer run. We recommend starting on Main St. downtown, perhaps at the Walmart Museum on Main St., site of the original five & dime store that started the empire. Then, explore some of the streets of the Bentonville Third Street Historic District — there are some attractive, tree-lined streets with a few historic homes. Quite runnable from Highway 71 to J St., and north of SE 8th St. Use Central Ave. as the anchor.
We’ve mapped a route to use as a guideline. It includes Main Street (Walmart Museum, Bentonville Public Library), the Third Street Historic District (east of Main St.), and the [New!] A Street Promenade — a pedestrian corridor stretching from SE 2nd Street to NE 3rd Street that includes garden nooks, café seating, play areas, and food trucks. Then, take the Downtown Trail, a multi-use path that goes from SE 5th St. to SW E St.
Longer Option: The Town Branch Trail runs for 1 mile at the eastern edge of town, between the 8th St. Market and Lawrence Plaza, where it connects to other trails. This then connects to the Razorback Regional Greenway, which extends for 36 miles between Bella Vista and Fayetteville (ROUTE MAP). Good downtown access point off E Central Ave. at Town Branch Park, or connect to it around SE 8th St. and the trails around the Walmart Campus. And just north of the historic district, connect to our Crystal Bridge Trail route, which has paved multi-use paths heading north for several miles or east to Orchards Park & Memorial Park.
