Merlin Castle & Merlin Park Woods

Creative Commons: Bart Busschots

Merlin Park Woods is the largest area of woodland in Galway. The 340-acre woodland, located a few km east of the city center, is part of the former Waithman estate, where there’s also the remains of Merlin Castle.

There’s a pleasant network of walking paths that make for some gentle trail running. Overall, one can put together 4-5 km in the woods. There’s a kiosk map at the trail entrance off Coillte Mhuirlinne Rd. It’s mainly wooded, with a couple of open areas. Nice variety of trees and plants.
