It’s worth the 1/2 hour drive from Hsinchu City to check our the trails of Emei Lake. This nature reserve, located 20 km south of the city, features walking and biking trails around the Dapu Reservoir. There are some lovely water views, a scenic suspension bridge, large statues, and other attractions. There isn’t a full trail around the reservoir — most of the runnable sections are at the northern end between the Ximaopu Suspension Bridge and the Emei Hu Parking lot.
Overall, you can do a route of ~4 km at the lake. A good place to start is at the parking area north of the Ximaopu Suspension Bridge. Head south, cross the bridge, and continue on the trail along the north side, with views of the Maitreya Bronze Statue. Head west, and use Kuaile Rd. to cross the water to the 1 km of trails on the northwest part of the lake. There are some lovely water views on these paths.
There’s also a running track at Fusing Elementary School where the parking lot is located.
Add-Ons: Some trail running options in the surrounding hills.
