Juneau Downtown Tour & Stairs

Creative Commons: Gillfoto

This is an exploration of Juneau’s historic & hilly downtown, including the State Capitol, Governor’s Mansion, Seawalk, and some other fun features. Some good options to add and vary, especially if you want to get the heart rate up on the numerous stair paths.

Start at the Juneau High School and run south for 1 mile along Glacier Ave. to Willoughby Ave., passing the Alaska State Museum. The next section is a 1.5 mile out and back through Marine Park and along the Juneau Seawalk. Back at Marine Park, head north on Main St., to the Bear Statue and State Capitol. LEFT on Calhoun Ave. to the Governor’s Mansion, to the set of stairs that lead back up to Main St. Take the stairs from 7th St. into Cope Park, then the small bridge over the creek, using W 12th St. to head back downhill to the start.

Add-Ons: Fun with stairs! Get the heart rate up and practice your hill training with the stairs of downtown Juneau! The longest stretch is the Seward St. Stairs from Seward & 5th to Cope Park. There are also stairs connecting 6th St. & 7th St. and at the Governor’s Mansion off Calhoun Ave. Other good add-ons are a jaunt across Douglas Bridge, and along Aurora Harbor.
