The Cliff Drive Scenic Byway is one of our favorite places to run in Kansas City. This scenic road, located in George E. Kessler Park in historic Northeast Kansas City and now permanently closed to cars, offers bluff-top views of the Missouri River and passes numerous historic sites. In addition to this wide road, which is now a recreation area, trail runners can enjoy the more rugged trails that parallel the byway.

The byway extends for 4.2 miles from The Paseo and Independence Ave. through Indian Mound on Gladstone Blvd. at Belmont Blvd. Headed east, you’ll pass several historic areas and sites: Kessler Park, The Concourse, North Terrace Lake, The Colonnade, Scarritt Point, The Reservoir, Indian Mound, Prospect Point, The Kansas City Museum, Carl J. DiCapo Fountain, & Ronnie DePasco Byway Memorials. There landscape is fairly wooded, with some open areas and occasional views of the river (more in winter!).

Trail runners should follow the Cliff Top, Scarritt, & Indian Mound trails, which roughly follows the Byway.
