There are two sections of lovely running along the River Shannon in Limerick. This route is focused on the northern portion, where runners can choose from up to 9 km of paths stretching from Milly Ferry Garden (just north of Shannon Fields) east to Castleroy. It’s possible to access these paths from the city centre, using the Canal Bank paths for 1.5 km to the Kevin Hannan footbridge. We’ve mapped the river route from the city centre.
Kevin Hannan footbridge Headed North: The paths are mainly gravel, alternating between wooded sections and some nice fields. From the Kevin Hannah Bridge, the section headed north is 2.6 km to Milly Ferry Garden, much of it on walking and cycling trail which runs throughthe historic Shannon Fields, honouring Limerick Olympian and WorldCross Country Champion Michael O’Shea. Exercise stations are available along the route. A nice out and back: City centre to the bridge, north to Milly Ferry, & back (8.6 km).
Section Through University of Limerick. Google Street View
Kevin Hannah Footbridge Headed East: There are paths headed up to 7 km east from the footbridge. The first section is through Quigley’s Lough, continuing past the University of Limerick Boat House, Troy’s Castle, and then the riverside fields of the University of Limerick. Continue east to Black Castle Castletroy. At the 4.5 km mark from the footbridge, continue on the path headed south on the River Mulkear to the end. Some sections more open with river views, others more wooded.
