A Comprehensive Guide to the Best Places to Run in Corpus Christi and Padre Island

The south Texan city of Corpus Christi sits between two small bays in the Gulf of Mexico, protected by a series of barrier beaches, including Mustang Island and Padre Island. This “Sparkling City by the Sea” is famous for its sandy beaches, excellent birdwatching, and a large port which plays a key role in the oil industry. Thanks to beaches, parks, and miles of multi-use pathways, there are many great places for running in Corpus Christi

The most popular place to run in Corpus Christi is the Corpus Christi Bay Trail, along the waterfront. However, runners will also find plenty of beach running on North Beach, Padre Island, and Mustang Island. Multi-use pathways like the Sunset Lake Trail, Texas A&M Hike and Bike Trail, Oso Bay Wetlands, Oso Creek Trail, and the Shea Parkway Trail can be found throughout the city. West of the city, the bucolic  Calallen neighborhood is very pleasant for running.

Most visitors choose to rent a car or use a rideshare service for getting around Corpus Christi, but don’t overlook the “Trolley,” an efficient and inexpensive bus system around town. These busses will take you to any of our running route locations, including Padre Island!

Texas A&M University Campus

Corpus Christi, TX

Though it’s technically part of the Corpus Christi Bay Trail, the path at Texas A&M University makes for a pleasant short run on its own. The Hike and Bike Trail is 1.4 miles (one way), but there are more interior university paths and the adjacent Bay Trail.

Sunset Lake Park

Corpus Christi, TX

Sunset Lake Park, located across the Nueces Bay in the suburb of Portland, includes a scenic paved multi-use trail which leads to the Indian Point Pier. Nice water views. 2.7 miles out and back with extensions along Sunset Drive.

Oso Bay Wetlands

Corpus Christi, TX

The Oso Bay Wetlands offer plenty of running options, including dirt paths, the Holly Hike and Bike Trail, and other multi-use trails. We’ve mapped a ~6 mile route that explores the whole area.

Oso Creek Trail

Corpus Christi, TX

Oso Creek is known for its mountain bike trails, but runners are welcome to utilize the dirt singletrack and multi use trails in this area surrounding Bill Witt City Park. Add more mileage along the Oso Parkway.

Shea Parkway

Corpus Christi, TX

This short 2 mile path along the creek following the Shea Parkway is a convenient running option in the South Side of Corpus Christi. Schanen Park and Breckenridge Park are both good starting points.

Calallen Neighborhood

Corpus Christi, TX

Fancy a run with interesting architecture and tree-lined streets? The go-to residential neighborhood for running in Corpus Christi is the Calallen suburbs, especially the area surrounding the River Hills Country Club.

Corpus Christi has a humid subtropical climate, featuring long, hot summers and mild, dry winters. Runners should take into account the summer heat, with average highs near 90F from May through October. Winters are pleasant for running, with daytime temps in the high 60s (19C) and nights dipping into the high 40s (8C). Summers are wetter, with thunderstorms, with September being the wettest month owing to tropical systems.
