A Comprehensive Guide to the Best Places to Run in Nagoya and Vicinity

Nagoya is the third largest city in Japan, and capital of the Aichi Prefecture. With its location on the Pacific coast on central Honshu, Nagoya is an important shipping an manufacturing hub. Although dense and industrial, there are some good spots for running in Nagoya — mainly in a series of small to moderate parks and some pleasant paths along the city’s numerous rivers. The best places to run in Nagoya include numerous parks — including Meijo and Tsuruma are centrally located, while Shonai Ryokuchi Park, and Heiwa park are larger. There are also paths along the Shonai/Yara rivers, and along the Yamazaki and Tenpaku Rivers.

Like other Japanese cities, transport is outstanding. All our routes are easily accessible via subway or train, and the extensive transport allows for some fun one-way running options! Note that summers in Nagoya are hot, humid, and wet.

Meijo Park

Nagoya, Japan

Small, centrally located park that's pleasant for running. There's a marked 1 km path around the park, which can be added to a with some of the other trails. For a longer run, the grounds of adjacent Nagoya Castle are scenic.

One of the larger, centrally located parks in Nagoya. Scenic paths and gardens and a fountain. Famous for cherry blossoms in April. About 2-3 km of paths. Can add with paths of adjacent Nagoya Institute of Technology.

Nagoya, Japan

One of the best spots for a longer, off-road run in Nagoya. Gravel paths line the Shonai River and Yada River, for 13+ km. The best section is from Daiko Park, west to Shonai Ryokuchi Park. There are some lovely parks and sections with cherry blossoms.

One of the larger green spaces in Nagoya. There are numerous paths, fields, tennis courts, and a small boat pond. Choose your own path or use the marked 1.8 and 2.3 km loops. For a longer run, connect to our Shonai/Yada River route.

This peaceful spot is located on hills above Nagoya in the Chikusa Ward is a great opportunity for a longer, greener, and less manicured run. There's a popular 6.5 km course around the park. Woodland paths lined with cherry trees, fields, stairs...and hills!

Yamazaki River Paths and Road

There are some pleasant paths, parks, and roads lining the Yamazaki River in the southeastern part of Nagoya. A nice 7k out and back is from the Mizuho Athletic Complex, north to Kawana Park, using the road or stepping down to a riverside path.

Paths along the east side of the Tenpaku River in the Tenpaku District, providing the opportunity for a longer off-road run. It's possible to run nearly 7.5 km one-way, in some spots on a levee above the water and in some spots alongside the water.

Nagoya has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot, humid, and wet, while winters are cool but not frigid. In summer, average temperatures climb to near 31C (88F), and stay warm at night. In winter, days approach 10C (near 50F), with nights around freezing. There can be snow snow, but rarely severe. It rains a lot in summer, mainly in the form of downpours.

There are numerous outlets of running shoe companies in Nagoya, notably Asics and New Balance.
