Two words describe the running scene in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area: weather and water. With 300 days of sunshine per year, a scenic geographic setting, and a good infrastructure of running trails and parks, Tampa-St. Pete is our favorite city for running in Florida. The two cities are separated by Tampa Bay. Our guide to running in Tampa-St. Petersburg, includes some routes in nearby Clearwater. This Tampa Bay City Guide is a terrific resource on things to do and hidden gems in the Tampa Bay area.
In Tampa, a must do is to run the world’s longest continuous sidewalk: the 4.5 mile Bayshore Linear Park along the waterfront. Another dramatic run is to do all or part of the 8.5 mile Courtney Campbell Causeway Trail, which is a fully separated path along the causeway connecting Tampa and and Clearwater. There are also some nice neighborhoods for running, Lopez Park, and the longer Upper Tampa Bay Trail outside of town.
In St. Petersburg, the three best options are wonderful routes near downtown: the North Bay trail out to Snell Isle, runs along the beach, and south to DeSoto Islan/Fort De Soto Park. It’s about 10 miles from downtown St. Pete to the beach. In Clearwater, we love running on Clearwater Beach, on the lovely waterfront trail along N. Bayshore Dr. to Safety Harbor, and on the Ream Wilson Trail linear park. For a longer distance run, choose a section of the 50+ mile Pinellas Trail connecting St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Tarpon Springs.
Runner Notes: The weather in this area is great — sunny nearly every day. June through September can be uncomfortable hot. Be aware of summer heat and near daily thunderstorms.
