Yaphank & Brookhaven Parks and Roads

Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. Wikimedia Commons

In the Yaphank and Brookhaven areas, there’s a good combination of trail running and road running options. Southhaven County Park is popular for fishing, camping, and boating along the river. There are also some narrow, wooded trails in the park that are good for hiking and trail running. For road running, there’s a separated bike path on River Rd., which runs alongside the east side of Southhaven County Park for 2.6 miles between the L.I. Expressway and Sunrise Highway.

Just south of Southhaven County Park, the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is an attractive spot. The Nature Trail offers a 2-mile loop and the 3.3 mile Black Tupelo trail starts from the visitor center and offers a view of the refuge from the east side of the Carmans River.
