Maine: Mid-Coast

Castine Running Highlights

Considered one of the oldest towns in New England, Castine is a charming midcoast Maine spot offering cozy inns, scenic views, and plenty of history. We have put together two routes for running in Castine, featuring its elm-lined main streets, waterfront roads, and trails in Witherle Woods:

Short Route: 3.7 miles. Start on Main St. & Battle Ave. and head downhill for 0.5 miles along the elm-lined historic street toward Castine Harbor. Turn RIGHT and run along the harbor, heading west along Perkins St. for 1 mile to the Dyce Head Lighthouse. Retrace your steps, running back up Pleasant St. and then do a quick jaunt around the pretty campus of the Maine Maritime Academy. MAP

Long Route: 4.7 miles. Follow the instructions above to the lighthouse. Here, instead of retracing your steps, take the path off Dyce Head Rd. around Witherle Woods, out to Blockhouse Point. The 185-acre Witherle Woods has 6.5 miles of hilly trails, some wooded and some open. Return to the center of Castine through Fort George and the Maine Maritime Academy. MAP
