Other Routes in Melbourne, Australia
If Melbourne does one thing right, it’s waterfront paths. The crown jewel of these is the Capital City Trail, which tracks the Yarra River through the central part of the city. This mostly paved path is a great flat loop to hop onto for a run of any length.
Running 'The Tan' track in Melbourne is a thing. The popular gravel running path looping around Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens and Kings Domain boasts its own website for recorded times! Good additional options nearby.
A lovely 10k tour of several central parks and gardens, the Olympics/Australian Open sites, and the Parliament area. Includes Melbourne Park, Yarra Park, Fitzroy Gardens, Carlton Gardens, Treasury Gardens, Wellington Parade.
Another run exploring Melbourne's extensive waterfront, featuring several promenades along the Yarra River, the Webb Pedestrian Bridge, Convention Center, and the wharves and sights of the Docklands area. 13 km, with options for shorter/longer. Video excepts!
Add this lake to your Melbourne options for waterside routes! Fortunately for runners, the architects of Albert Park had the foresight to build a nearly 7.5 km track along the water’s edge, for a lovely lake tour.
It’s hard to resist the Bay Trail, or the “Solar System Trail” which keeps you going from the Sun to Pluto with the astrophysics themed artwork scaled down to the length of this seaside path.
Simple and central — sometimes when it comes to running, those are the key ingredients, and they are exactly why we love the nice flat track around Princes Park. Not only is it easy to get to, it’s a pretty relaxed run for anyone seeking level terrain.
The twists and turns of the Yarra River are the stars of this running route, but it wouldn’t be a trip to Melbourne if you didn’t make a point to visit the fascinating peaked roofs and decorative windows of the historic Abbotsford Convent.
A popular, green run in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. Sort of a linear park, with the Main Yarra Trail passing through a combination of woods, fields, & wetlands. Various distance options, including a longer 21 km route.
An 11+ km path along the coast of Port Phillip Bay, almost seamless between Hampton Beach and St. Kilda. Separate paved and gravel paths in sections. Great water views, sandy beaches, and some nice parks/gardens.
Another river in Melbourne that's great for running. The Maribyrnong River, which pours into the Yarra from the northwest corner of the city, is bordered by a lovely paved shared use path which is separated from the water by nothing but a stand of palm trees.
While Carlton and Fitzroy often take the credit for being the "hippest" neighborhoods in Melbourne, Williamstown to the west is another fun choice for a day of running, shopping, and eating. We've designed a 'tour of Williamstown', and a longer coastal route.
We've developed a separate running guide for the Dandenongs, located 35 km east of Melbourne. Wonderful trail running options in this area of temperate rain fores and rolling hills.
